DIY Auto Repair: 6 Maintenance Procedures You Can Do At Home

Owning a car is one of the biggest investments you will ever make.  And while it already costs a lot just to buy a car, it also costs quite a bit to maintain a vehicle.  But you can reduce some of this overhead by doing some of this maintenance yourself.  Here are 6 of the easiest ways to save money with DIY auto repair:

Changing a Flat Tire

This, of course, is one of the most common—and least difficult—DIY auto repair projects.  If you have a flat tire (and a spare tire) you just have to loosen the lug nuts fastening our wheel to the axle and then elevate the car to remove the tire.  Most cars already have a jack and a tire iron in the trunk, next to or under the spare tire.  This requires no special knowledge, just some common sense.

Can Do At Home

Rotating Your Tires

If you can change a tire, then you should also be able to rotate your tires. This is an important process if you want to get the maximum use from your tires.  Basically, this process involves moving all four tires to new positions on the vehicle.

Changing Your Oil

Every three months or 3,000 miles you need to change your oil.  While this is not too costly a procedure, you can save money by doing this yourself.  This job can be slightly complicated—and messy—but it is also something that you can master quickly after just a few attempts

Replacing Brake Pads

Brake pads are very important.  Brakes work when pressing on the pedal instructs the calipers to apply pressure to the wheels, which slows them down.  Cross Drilled Rotors Brake pads absorb this friction and over time they will wear down. This can be a somewhat complicated process but not impossible, even for the average person with no car maintenance experience.

Replacing The Air Filter

Clean air is just as important to your car as it is to…you.  The air filter ensures that your engine remains free from bugs and dust and other debris.  Filters are inexpensive and very easy to change (and can make a huge difference in regards to your fuel efficiency).

Replacing The Fuel Filter

Most people have their fuel filter replaced at the manufacturer’s recommended interval (as part of a professional maintenance schedule).  However, you can do this at home as well.  This process can be complex but does not require any special tools or knowledge. If you can follow simple instructions, you could accomplish this within the hour.
